sweet life

IT'S BAAAACKKKK. Katie and I decided it was about time we revived our Pattern Pals series from the dead, and just in time for Candy Eating Season! So yep, we made candy patterns. Mine is inspired by delicious delicious black licorice.

What, you don't like black licorice? You're crazy. Next you're going to tell me that you don't like circus peanuts or candy corn.

If you're in the mood for something mintier, check out Katie's SUPER DUPER cute pattern! Here come the downloads...

I'll leave you with this relevant music video...

this must be the place

EMMA_TRITHART_Silverlake_2B_WK4

Another week, another Make Art That Sells assignment! Every time I work on one of these I feel like I'm back at MCAD, making mac and cheese in my dorm room and then turning on my stupid lamp (you know the one) and hunkering down at my desk to get started. There are a lot of reasons I'm happy to be in the real world, but sometimes I miss college!

Speaking of the real world, this week's assignment was to make a map of the place you live. Since we've been living in LA for a nanosecond I decided to focus on the little stretch of Sunset off of Santa Monica that we've been walking to on almost a weekly basis. There's plenty of cafes and fun shops to look at, and if you want there's a longer walk home so you can look at all the pretty houses.

Here are links to all the places on my map, for those curious:

Bryan was also inspired to make a little video documenting some of the neighborhoods and things we've seen out and about... starring this moi! That's right, I'm a famous. Please, respect celebrity privacy.

orange you glad

Starting last Sunday we drove from Minnesota to Iowa to Nebraska to Colorado to Nevada to Utah to a tiny bit of Arizona and finally to California. We are exhausted but happy- now it's time to focus on getting the apartment together and finding work.

In case you're wondering, we stayed at the Golden Gate Casino in Las Vegas, which is in the "old" section of Vegas. We eventually made our way over to strip, but I enjoyed the Container Park (plenty of artsy shops and bars) and the Fremont Street Experience (weird light shows? tiny bayou themed coin slot machine casinos? yes) the most. The hotel itself was kind of a mess though, so I'd recommend finding lodging elsewhere.

band together

Here's a project that's near and dear to my heart. Fair Oaks is an amazing band out of Minneapolis, two of whose members also happen to be buddies of mine! When Molly and Andy came to me to see if I'd do their album art for This Is The River clearly the answer was yes. They were pretty open to the look of the art, but after giving some early cuts of a few songs a listen I felt like the whole thing just came together! That photo in the background is totally a polaroid I found at an antique store by the way - there was nothing else in the shot ... just that tree trunk.

Seriously though, this album is worth giving a spin and then enthusiastically buying. You could go for my favorite track (THE CLAPS) or you could check out this awesome lyric video for another stellar song that my awesome fella made for them!

The CD release show was last weekend, so all of this is fresh in my mind. The album is already getting a lot of positive spin, and I couldn't be more happy for them!

signs of life

After another whirlwind weekend (space parties and amazing estate sales oh my) I've just got a few fun programming notes.

First up... FIRST AVE! My font got the super size treatment for a billboard (complete with giant coffee cup) that was placed atop world famous downtown Minneapolis concert venue First Avenue. This place has hosted about five million amazing concerts AND you can see it in Purple Rain. I was, understandably, very excited to go give the billboard a looksee.

Speaking of First Ave, I'm going to see James Blake there at the beginning of May! Have you listened to his new album? So good so goooooood.

Last but not at all least, let's talk about Miserable & Worthless. This awesomely named zine comes from MCAD alumni Tuesday Bassen and her buddy Lyndsay Eyth and is chock full of lady art... including a piece from me! Seriously, pre-order this bad boy while you still can. I can't wait to get mine in the mail!

grimy

Claire Boucher (aka Grimes) is officially my girl/artist/musician crush of the year. Bryan started listening to her in the spring and I followed quickly - her girlish charm, varying hairstyles and AMAZING crazy music videos are only the tip of the iceberg. This girl has some major musical chops, every single one of her songs appeals to the witchy dance-y vibe that I love.

AND, as long as her ears stay healthy we're going to see her in concert this coming Monday! AHH I am so excited to see her and dance my brains out. But, and here is a big issue: what will I wear?! This is not your average "wear what you want" concert in my mind, I think I need to step it up. Maybe go just a little nuts in the accessories department? Many outfits will be planned, and I'm evening taking an emergency shopping trip with Alli this weekend.

In the meantime I present to you one cheap and one spendy outfit... for inspiration.

p.s. I had an illustration of Grimes started as well, but I just lost my wacom tablet pen and can't do anything until I found it! Toots.

curled up

Ah, girlfriends. I am so lucky to have the BEST ladies in the world. For instance, who else would come over to my apartment during her short stint back in the twin cities and spend TWO EVENINGS IN A ROW doing my hair? Katie is a super talented illustrator, small business owner, fantastic blogger ANDDDD guys. She knows how to pin curl like a boss.

So we decided that everyone should learn how to pin curl, because you're going to look like Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally, and that is a very good thing. We also made a companion video, produced by my super amazing boyfriend. A round of applause for him, everyone. Another round of applause for sloslylove, a friend of Katie's whose sweet sweet tunes are featured in the video.

On to the instructions!! you'll need...

-straight bobby pins (I like to have 2 full cards - you'll use a lot of pins)
-setting lotion / styling cream (I've heard good things about this stuff, but I usually just use a dab of this)
-hairspray (cheap is fine. I like this)
-large silk or cotton scarf / bandana

1) Begin at least 12 hours before you want curls - preferably 24. Resign yourself to the fact that you will be wearing a headscarf around town / to work / in the comfort of your own home for the day. Trust me, you look awesome.

2) Wash your hair thoroughly, using only shampoo, no conditioner. If you have time, let it air dry about 75%, if not, just use a blowdryer. You don't need it bone-dry (it's easier to set slightly damp) but the set will be tight enough that it won't have the opportunity to dry much more. 3) Work a nickel size portion of your setting lotion through your hair. Part your lovely locks down the middle. I like to set in quadrants (especially if I'm working on my own head) and tie off the rest in a pony.

4) Begin your pinning anywhere on your head - I like to start on the top, in the middle next to the part, and work out from there. Grab about a 1/2 inch square section of hair. Make it slightly smaller, about a 1/4 inch square, for super-tight curls. Pull the hair away from your head. Starting at the very end, wrap it around your forefinger, but not too tightly, since you'll need to slide it off. (If you're having trouble picturing this, place the strand on hair on top on your finger, hold the very end with your thumb, and trace a circle with your pointer.) When your finger reaches your scalp, you'll have a big ring of twisted hair around it.

5) Gently pull the ring of hair off your finger, and pin it in place with a single bobby pin (thicker and/or longer hair will need two pins, crossed into an X). Try to keep the end of the hair tucked into the pin.

6) Continue until your full head is pinned. If you have bangs, particularly it they are short or thick, consider leaving them straight - very short hair set in curls get wild quick. Like, 80s prom hair wild.

7) At this point, you now have a decent idea of how you'd look with a matted buzz cut. Mist your entire head with a lot of hairspray. Don't be shy.

8) Next, you'll tie your headscarf. (If you're a video person, check out this adorable, detailed video for good instructions - you can skip to 1:12.) Fold your scarf in half so it makes a triangle. Lean your head forward, resting the folded edge of the scarf against the nape of your neck with the point falling toward your face. Tie the ends of the scarf together over the point, right where your forehead meets your hairline (you're trying to keep all your pin curls under this scarf cover, so they're protected). Continue tying the ends, tucking the point of the scarf back into the knot, so you've got a little flat bun of scarf in the front, like the flower on Blossom's hat. Secure the scarf to your head with a few pins.

9) Carry on your merry way for 12-24 hours.

10) When you're ready for curls, untie the scarf and begin to remove the pins, one curl at a time - I usually go from the bottom up. Pay attention to how these look when unfurled - you may want to gentle separate some of the tangly, rope like twists. You can always go back when your full head is free and pull a few pieces apart for more volume. For a more fro-like look, separate every curl. This will make your hair nice and frizzy. If you're looking for softer curls, you can gently brush or pick your hair - you'll get some knots, but you'll end up with a very old-hollywood wave. At the end, I like to stick my fingers in right next to my scalp and wiggle to get a little lift at the root.

a) final product b) head scarf buddies! c) this is what my (very stubborn) hair looked like at the end of the night... and it was super wavy and gorgeous the next day!!

creeper

fiend

On our way home last night, Bryan and I happened to catch the Halloween edition of Sound Opinions on the radio - and they were, of course, talking about the songs that creeped them out the most. This really got us thinking, so we put our heads together (well, Bryan's vast-knowledge-of-music head and my minute-understanding-of-what-music-even-is head) and put together a little list of creepytown Halloween sounds for you! Happy Halloweenie, and thanks to Bryan for help on this one.

Le Chat Du Café Des Artistes - Charlotte Gainsbourg
When you're dead, you're dead. My top pick.

The Amazing Sounds of Orgy - Radiohead
Bryan's ultimate #1 top pick.

Pirate Jenny - Nina Simone
Sound Opinions played this one, I'd never heard it before but DANG. Nina Simone knows what's up.

God's Away on Business - Tom Waits
Master of demented songs, and a great music video!

Venus in Furs - The Velvet Underground
"It's like a fever dream" - Bryan

What's a Girl To Do - Bat For Lashes
1:20 in this video seriously haunts my dreams/makes me want to draw 500 million ghosts.

Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
Another genius pick by Bryan, Chris Isaak with a song that manages to be 100% creepy and 100% sexy at the same time.

b - iamamiwhoami
Remember when there was speculation that this lady might have been Christina Aguilera? Xtina!

Devil Town - Daniel Johnston.
Disturbing song from a disturbed mind.

And, to end on a light note, this silly song for funsies:
Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell

mad about hue

photograph by style me pretty & painting by morgan blair

My awesome buddy Tanya just pointed out that I've been collecting this color palette of white, tan, orange, marigold, red and teal a LOT. And it's true! I can't get enough of it, it's girly but not the cotton candy and pigtails kind. Looks like it's time to get crackin' at another illustration.

The other thing I'm excited about right now is Melancholia, Lars Von Trier's next movie. It's a companion piece to Antichrist AND it stars my girl crush, Charlotte Gainsbourg! It looks gorgeous and sad and a little terrifying (I'm super afraid of outer space for some reason). Antichrist, if you haven't seen it, is not exactly a movie for the faint of heart, but I've come to really like it. My movie lovin' boyfriend showed me some making-of documentaries and articles that gave a lot of insight into what the movie was all about. It's also pretty gorgeous.

Anything catching your eye a lot recently?

music to my ears

I listened to this song NONSTOP yesterday. It might be a good karaoke song, if I did karaoke. It's just a Blondie kinda weekend, I guess.

Next week there's something fun in the works.... I can't wait to share it with you guys! In the meantime, let's listen to some of my other Blondie favorites....

oops

Oh hey, I'm really bad at this "weekly themed post" doohicky. But what can I say? I spent last night DANCIN!!!! After that I watched the Wire with my buddy Diana. I also ate chicken fingers earlier in the day and dumped some buckets of water on all of the students at SES. Hopefully now that the program is almost over I will get back into the blogging thing.

p.s. speaking of the internet, have you seen the trailer for the social network? Aaron Sorkin writes a movie about facebook? David Fincher directs? ADORABLE CHILDRENS CHOIR SINGS RADIOHEAD IN THE TRAILER?!??!!? What could be better.

french doors

(from another mag)

My girl crush on Charlotte Gainsbourg is growing exponentially. Great music, bilingual, artsy films AND the most beautiful parents in the world. What's not to like?

Alsooo I know, these last three posts or so have been DUDS. After I got back from New York I started a new job and my annual summer gig (SES!) started, so I've been commuting like a mad woman and hanging out with cool people for keeps. So please, enjoy the beautiful music of Charlotte Gainsbourg and don't think about how boring my blog is.

thinly veiled

veil

I have been playing around in photoshop & illustrator A LOT recently... and not really saving much. But this one made the cut! I based it on a sweet photograph I saw (can you imagine this for realsies?) but of course can't find the image.

Next week I'm going to Ann Arbor to see my younger (taller) brother graduate from college. This seems like it must be some sort of joke! Are we getting old? One of my friends pointed out that he remembered when my brother graduated from HIGH SCHOOL. IT WASN'T THAT LONG AGO, FOLKS. Crazytown. I've decided to try that thing out where you plan all your outfits in advance... the last few times I've traveled I've managed to pack a bunch of things that don't go well together, so we'll see how this goes.

Also... puppies:

serenade

It was Chance's birthday concert last night, and what song did the birthday band Communist Daughter cover, but the very song that has been stuck in my head for ages! Once I tried to make my own version in Garage Band. It was embarrassing.

i want my mtv

I am not a person who buys cds all the time and goes to concerts a lot - but I do still like music. It's mostly been what's on my ipod, though, so new musical discoveries are scarce. But recently I've been liking a few new things, would you like to hear them?

feeling good

How sweet is this video? I've always loved this song, and with this new type-y motion graphic-y element I love it even more (via black eiffel)

To even out the amount of (f)arts that're being posted here, some thoughts about fashion: I have been trying real hard to use all the willpower I ever had in order to NOT BUY CLOTHING. I haven't really gone shopping for two months, and have bought perhaps one or two items of clothing in this span. Because I am so dangerously addicted to retail therapy, I've predictably been going crazy because of this. Here are the things that I have almost bought before slapping myself on the wrist and quickly navigating away from the page:

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP:
-Very Parisian one piece bathing suit from gojane. Do these swimsuits ever flatter anyone? I must figure this out.
-Equestrian bag from fred flare. I feel like my red plaid bag (also from fred flare) really looks best in the wintertime, and I have never owned a classic bag like this before. The color, the stitching! I WANT.
-Heart purse from Forever21. This little guy is almost useless and completely frivolous, but I still want it. Also it is impossible to find on the website now, so I linked to a similar one.
-Painter's tank from Built by Wendy. I actually had to put my credit card back into my wallet for this one, because for today it's ONLY TEN DOLLARS. It just looks so simple and sweet. Go go go, the sample sale ends soon!

tiny toons

Thanks to a combination of DirectTV and boredom, one night the boy and I found out (I decline to use the word "discovered" because this has probably been going on for awhile, and "discovering" implies being the first one to know in my mind) that good cartoons are back! Oh the days of Doug (the good one), Rocko's Modern Life, Angry Beavers, Ah Real Monsters... the list goes on. They ended long ago and were replaced by bad flash and imports from Japan (some good, some bad).

[EDIT: how could I not mention FOSTER'S HOME FOR IMAGINARY FRIENDS?!?!?! Thanks Alli! This one is the exception to the rule. It's so good!]

But there are some new kids on the block! The first one is Chowder, which I like because it combines cartoons (which I love) with cooking (which I also love). The humor is perfectly juvenile yet well timed, and the characters are FRICKIN' ADORABLE.

The second is Flapjack! Flapjack is all about how awesome the ocean is, AND it was created in part by Pendleton Ward (who made adventure time) and it super hilarious and also very well put together!! Both Flapjack and Chowder, oddly enough, use stop motion from time to time, which is awesome.

page turner

I've been a fan of hand made books ever since I started taking print paper book classes at college, but I've never really been able to figure out how to properly display them on my website. Thankfully, since the interwebs are so awesome, I figured it out: VIDEOS. videos are the future, you guys. DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN UPLOAD THEM TO THE INTERNAT?

anyway, I made a new section on my website and put up some videos and photos of two of my favorite books. Maybe I'll even make more books, now that I have a place to put them!

Here are the videos, for your viewing pleasure.
