wrapped

scarves

I started wearing scarves of the more silken variety around a year ago, and now I find it hard to go a day without wearing one! I've been acquiring them left and right now, some from my mom, some from vintage stores and flea markets, some from miss allison herself.

today I spilled 'em all out on the floor to find one scarf in particular and was struck by how frickin' many I have!! SO MANY. Here are some close-ups. Patterns are beautiful.

LOST

So not only was last night's episode of Lost amazing because J.F. Sebastien from Bladerunner made a cameo BUT a particularly irate member of the Dharma initiative threatened his coworkers that he was going to call Ann Arbor. THATS RIGHT. ANN ARBOR MICHIGAN, MY HOMETOWN. A quick blog post on the MLive website gives a few more details.

Anyway, not only did the Dharma Initiative get its start in my hometown, but my little brother's name is Jacob. WHAT DOES IT MEEEAAAANNNN.

subtract

"The greatest hazard of all, losing one's self, can occur very quietly in the world, as if it were nothing at all. No other loss can occur so quietly; any other loss - an arm, a leg, five dollars, a wife, etc. - is sure to be noticed."
-Søren Kierkegaard

This week's illustration friday is themed "subtraction", which has a terrible lot of possible interpretations past the mathematical one. Lots of personal meanings to apply! Here are some other ones I liked from this week - ben conservato, won tsuen, andre gribble and ori toor.

arteest of the month or so

I should maybe start talking about or linking to a specific artist I like more regularly. Lets start with Jon Klassen, who has named his website Burst of Beaden. He is an incredibly talented illustrator who seems to have no boundaries as far as what crazy stuff he can make. Most notably would be some gorgeous concept art for the movie Coraline - I love the little architectural details he included in those pieces.

However it's his personal work (like the piece above) has enchanted me. A lot of it deals with the great vastness of a landscape, which is so totally amazing when combined with his style. He also worked on "An Eye for Annai", which I spoke about earlier on this very blog. Go check him out!

passive

can we talk about how much I love passiveaggressivenotes?!!?!?!? I think everyone has written one of these before, which is perhaps why each entry is so much funnier. The one above I imagine many an art student could giggle about.

I will most certainly notice these notes much more often, that's for sure. AND thanks to this website I was introduced to the design police. I will most likely be using their little download package to make sure everyone knows the gravity that is the public use of Comic Sans.

When the ENTIRETY of my dad's side of the family gets together, this is how much food we make. Two whole tables of this. IT WAS SO DELICIOUS THOUGH.

finally, miho

miho finally, originally uploaded by emma_brown.

I found this mysterious message lying around the Lunning's house a few weeks ago. They have a Japanese exchange student named Miho... so that part of the mystery is solved, but what is that monster? And finally what? THESE QUESTIONS MUST BE ANSWERED!!!

I like finding little blips of things I've done in my computer, this one I made for Bill while he was in Michigan and sent me a funny text message that made me smile. TEAL + PINK!!

spring ahead

03.06.0903.06.09

earrings: vintage (Everyday People, mpls mn)
scarf: vintage (Abigail's Antiques, hudson wi)
flower brooch: h&m
cardigan: target
shirt: urban
jeans and bag: from alli!
shoes: walmart

I was going to post today about my supposed trip to zen box for lunch, but I got lost in the labyrinth that is the Minneapolis skyway system so I had to go to the Macy's food court for lunch instead (which was also tasty).

INSTEAD I'm going to post what I wore today, which I actually have never done before. But it is springy and beautiful outside and I feel springy and beautiful inside! Especially because I'm about to go find some good mom jeans at Savers with Alli. We're going to turn them into short shorts. It will be fun.

OH HAPPY DAY.

p.s. Music of the day is most certainly Andrew Bird's new album, Noble Beast. I just spent about five minutes on Youtube trying to figure out which song to link to. THEY'RE ALL SO GOOD. In the end, I chose Masterswarm.

watch the birdie

Here is a bird. I painted him during an Illustration Friday frustration session. "Breezy" as a keyword was NOT cutting it for me... Couldn't come up with one good illustration!

This bird is actually a front for me to ask all you designers/illustrators/lovers of scanning out there: Do you own a scanner? What brand/model of scanner do you use? Do you like it? My roomie has a scanner but with Intel macs you have to open up Photoshop in Rosetta in order to use it, and for some reason I can't open my Photoshop with Rosetta... so I'm thinking about getting one of my own.

feeling good

How sweet is this video? I've always loved this song, and with this new type-y motion graphic-y element I love it even more (via black eiffel)

To even out the amount of (f)arts that're being posted here, some thoughts about fashion: I have been trying real hard to use all the willpower I ever had in order to NOT BUY CLOTHING. I haven't really gone shopping for two months, and have bought perhaps one or two items of clothing in this span. Because I am so dangerously addicted to retail therapy, I've predictably been going crazy because of this. Here are the things that I have almost bought before slapping myself on the wrist and quickly navigating away from the page:

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP:
-Very Parisian one piece bathing suit from gojane. Do these swimsuits ever flatter anyone? I must figure this out.
-Equestrian bag from fred flare. I feel like my red plaid bag (also from fred flare) really looks best in the wintertime, and I have never owned a classic bag like this before. The color, the stitching! I WANT.
-Heart purse from Forever21. This little guy is almost useless and completely frivolous, but I still want it. Also it is impossible to find on the website now, so I linked to a similar one.
-Painter's tank from Built by Wendy. I actually had to put my credit card back into my wallet for this one, because for today it's ONLY TEN DOLLARS. It just looks so simple and sweet. Go go go, the sample sale ends soon!

meme memory

This game was going around on facebook for a few days, and some fun things came out of it! Basically what you do is go to Wikipedia's random article for the band name, take the last four or five words from a random quote here for your album title, and use the third photo on flickr's most interesting from the last seven days, and put it all together!

I like how these four look like they probably belong to the same snooty independent label. Creators in order of appearance: Bryan, David, Eric, and Me.

booked

M.S. Corley has been getting a lot of attention as of late with his fantastic, classic Penguin style redesigns of the Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket book covers. I too have drooled over these, and was rather excited with the new set of His Dark Materials redesigns. Word has it the Narnia series is coming next.

Check this guy out, he is seriously talented!

cover me!

matt jones!

On Friday night I hauled my lil' patootie down to go see Matt Jones play at the 331 Club! I had been working with Matt and a friend of mine from high school on his album, "The Black Path" for some time, and it finally made it to my hands that Friday night!

It's been great working with Matt, not only because we came up with some great imagery, but also because his music is actually awesome! I've already talked about this before, so I will not bore you with my gushyness again.
