clothes line

I finally said it out loud a week ago and haven't been able to stop thinking about it: I'm in a fashion rut. It seems redonk - my closet is definitely as full as it can get (small apartment), and it's full of pieces I really like. But something's not right, there's a disturbance in the force. My tastes are changing or I'm getting bored with what I have. Summer is certainly tricky in Minnesota, since most of the year I'm hoarding and wearing cold weather clothing, and then July rolls around and HELLO 90 degree weather! (Everyone who lives in a hotter state is probably laughing bitterly at me for complaining about this)

It would be nice if I could just run out and drop boom boom dollars on new clothing, but currently I'm trying to keep my extraneous spending at a minimum. Freelance life, baby. I'M ROLLING IN THE UNSTEADY AND UNTRUSTWORTHY DOLLARS. Maybe that's a good thing, though, because now I have time to plan. Have you ever felt like you need a total closet revamp? What do you do, because (real talk) I feel like sitting on the ground and crying until someone fixes it for me. And here's the thing: it's just clothing, and I have what I need. So I'm trying to remember that through all this frustration.

I've been paying extra attention to the ladies that make it onto my outfit inspiration board: what is it that draws me to their style? Bryan pointed out the other day that I seem to be the happiest (and look the best) in outfits with simple but interesting pieces that fit well, and that's what I'm seeing on these ladies:

fashion is a playground / lucy laucht (at least I've already got a hat like this!)

I'll let you know, dearest bloggie, if I ever remedy this very non-emergency issue... but in the meantime, who wants to give me a makeover? Preferably while we listen to the entire Clueless soundtrack.

  1. something similar happened to me a few years ago. i am pretty cheap with clothing (usually i get almost everything, save a few pairs of pants per year, from the thrifts) so what helped was limiting myself to a handful of colors and styles that look good on me and match with each other. before my closet was sort of a jumble of colors and prints that didn't really "go" and thus it was often hard to put on a decent outfit.

after awhile of careful thrifting i was able to amass a wardrobe of many pieces that i knew were flattering and also could be mixed up a lot and it has been pretty nice. sticking to classic pieces and colors has been key.

    1. I totally feel you on the jumble of colors & prints... it's just so hard to pass up that cute pattern that catches your eye in the store! Must learn to simplify.

  2. I would love to help! I'm really good at giving fashion advice to others but not so much to myself. I also have about 10 bags of clothing to get rid of so you are welcome to anything in it. Although, I don't really have anything like the pieces above... What about a closet clean out and a trip to the thrift store?

    1. omg, we haven't thrifted in forever! I have a few busy weeks ahead of me, but once those have passed we DEFINITELY need to hit up some thrift stores, I would love some advice from the Babe in Thriftland herself!

  3. Yes to all of this! I agree that my style tastes are transitioning into the simpler, more grown up looks and pieces as well. I am also not able to purchase anything new right now, but I have been trying to purge anything that doesnt really fit into that new look, so that I whittle down what I do have to the basics... AND MAN, I have been looking for the perfect jean shorts like those above for YEARS DUDE, and nothing is quite right! How do these girls find them, I wonder?!

  4. haha, I always find it best to follow staples of pop culture than trends! i feel happier that way. I used to be a trend whore, tried to constantly be one step ahead, but I grew weary and the internet kills things for me. Once it gets 20k reblogs IM OVER IT haha but seriously. find inspiration in art, music, film, dress according to that. At least that what I do! good luck missy and I LOVE YOUR ART..EEEE!! SO CUTE i wanna get married now so I can have a floral portrait!

    1. Ahhhhh, you are so dead on. Looking outside of the immediate fashion realm might really help me... although to be honest YOU are one of my big fashion inspirations, haha! THANKS LADY!!
