metropolis

i love ny

In the last post I mentioned a little trip I'm planning and I realized I never said exactly wheeerrreee I was headed to - oops, it's New York! The big apple! A place where stuff happens! I've never been before but I love movies like Manhattan that are little love letters to the city ... and they make me think that's the city I want to visit. Obviously also I love Sex & the City, although it's really Woody Allen's New York as of late that's given me the itch.

Anywho, where should I go? Anyone been before? I'm not really planning on going to the statue of liberty or anything since it'll be a quick trip. I'm thinking more like MoMA, Katz's Deli, Shopsin's (music plays when you click the link), maybe even try to see Martha Stewart live... I've got a food based trip plan for the most part. Maybe vintage clothing shopping in the Lower East Side? GIVE ME THOSE SUGGESTIONS.

  1. Mamoun's falafel on St. Mark's Place.
Brad P. and I had a funny realization that pretty much everyone we knew had been there, though no one told anyone else about it.

  6. katz deli is delicious but it is a tourist trap rip off! way to expensive. surely you know someone out there of you wouldn't be going, I'm sure they know of a better, cheaper, and more jewish deli, I forget the name of the place I always get taken but I like it. I don't know what you like but I know what is awesome and there is no way anyone in minneapolis who knows me would not like it.
go to the natural history museum, you will like it.
if you are there for a sunday evening go to the UCB theater in chelesa for their weekly asscat show. it's always free, but you have to wait outside because it's first come first serve. it's always good.

  8. St. Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Ave is awesome and the Whitney. Also you could try to see inside Chelsea Hotel. I hope to see some of you drawings inspired by your trip when you get back!

  9. UM DEFINITELY UNIQLO-- sensible Japanese clothes in every color imaginable, and at extremely agreeable prices (80 dollar cashmere sweaters wowee!!). They only have one US location and no online store (yet), so this is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Their store is near a really big Forever 21 and other good shopping in SoHo.

    Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-check it out.

  10. OH AND: The Grey Dog (Cafe): 33 Carmine Street, at the edge of the West Village. They have the loveliest, and very affordable, sandwiches and cakes and things. They also have a large amount of tasteful U of M paraphernalia, quite inexplicably. It's close to very good bookshops, Washington Square Park, and NYU. Keep your eyes peeled for buoys and you should be okay.

the best thing to do though....don't listen to recommendations....just go to every hole in the wall you find...

  12. if you like vintage clothing, go to beacon's closet in brooklyn! i just got back from nyc yesterday, & i spent way too much money there! one of their locations is just off bedford ave, which you can get to on the L train, get off at the first brooklyn stop. if you're going over a weekend, make a list of all the flea markets before you go, there's tons. plus i got a good burger & milkshake here. have fun!
