goals

my goal this week is to make one little illustration a day. here is today's. It is very very colorful. it also happens to be my very first Illustration Friday! The subject was time, and I decided to be silly and do an illustration about how time is crazy and abstract and maybe not real.

p.s. just got the last issue of domino ever and cried into its beautiful pages. WHY MUST IT ALL BE SO EXPENSIVE?!

A few months ago the roomie and I were talking about how awesome the insides of envelopes can be - you know, when you get something a little secret or private from somebody official, and there's a pattern on the inside of the envelope to make it difficult to see what's inside?

Yes. Anyway, I was just thinking about it today, thanks to a great cross-hatch found on the inside of some information from my insurance company, and I decided to look into these patterns. And it turns out there are a lot of people out there who share my love!

Most notably is work of wave's collection of over 75 patterns from various contributors, on their website and on flickr. The one above is probably one of my favorite commonly seen patterns.

Trying to experiment with my work more in hopes that something will strike a chord and then I'll get tons and tons of freelance jobs (OR SOMETHING!).

ANYWHO, this is all traditional elements scanned in and messed about with in photoshop. I'm not quite sure if it's done or not, but it's going to be in a series of Chinese zodiac animal illustrations. The little stringy at the bottom is a reference to this interesting belief.

I've been a fan of hand made books ever since I started taking print paper book classes at college, but I've never really been able to figure out how to properly display them on my website. Thankfully, since the interwebs are so awesome, I figured it out: VIDEOS. videos are the future, you guys. DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN UPLOAD THEM TO THE INTERNAT?

anyway, I made a new section on my website and put up some videos and photos of two of my favorite books. Maybe I'll even make more books, now that I have a place to put them!

I often get bored/embarrassed/tired of the little images I make for sending to various art directors/design agencies/people i want to hire me, so I make a lot. Here are a few of the most recent ones!


a rabbit! i sold prints of this guy at the art sale.


this lady came about from a bunch of sketches and my extreme need to pair blue and red together.


this one's the most recent of my series, focusing more on my hand-done type than illustrations - but it's keeping with the copy of the other ones. I love writing out "how are you?", it's got the most perfect combination of great looking letters and sounds. Plus it's kind of an adorable pleasantry.

In a perfect world I would basically be Anna over at D16. It would be great to own a beautiful house and know how to fix it up and have great taste in furniture, yes yes, but really in the end I just think it would rock to be a book cover designer.

I always enjoy looking through The Book Design Review (that's where I found "The Great Perhaps") and The Book Cover Archive makes me want to either (1) curl up and never make anything again or (2) try my hardest to make something as awesome as all the stuff in there.

I always, ALWAYS judge a book by its cover.
