fire & water

fire lady

sketch of the day, I did this the other day whilst the students were trying out watercolors. I haven't actually used watercolor in a long time, so it was a strange experience. Watercolor always looks nice when I use it sparingly, but my full watercolor illustrations never look great.

I want that dress.

in the bag

07.27.09

I picked up this sweet little number on MCAD's free shelf ages ago whilst still pursuing my degree. This shelf is a gem of discovery for art students, as the idea is to leave things you don't want on it and take the things you do want. The bag (vintage Samsonite, Gulf Blue) has been a semi-permanent staple in my life. This bag saw me get mugged (it sat in the closet for awhile after that), three different apartments, and now it is my bag of choice to take to a one week illustration class I'm teaching for high schoolers!

When moving out of my last place, the lovely Katie asked if I was leaving it (no) and to look out for another bag like it. Well, Katie, today is your lucky day. ETSY SPECIAL FEATURE: VINTAGE SAMSONITE BAGS GO!!!!

beloved bag lady & Modish Vintagedo train cases.

Suzi's Corner Boutique and Custom Yes' Shop both have bags like mine!

and Bushangie76 has the mac daddy of them all - this yellow set of luggage. You don't know how bad I want to buy it. MAYBE IF I WIN THE LOTTERY.

p.s. I added my blog to blog-lovin', follow if you'd like using the button a little ways down the page!

dressing

07.23.09twirly

you guys, I have a problem. And that problem is dresses. I buy them, a lot. I don't wear them often. THIS IS A BAD HABIT. So in order to justify my addiction, I'm going to post a few photos of dresses I've acquired and haven't worn a lot yet.

the russian dress!the russian dress!

I got this fab-o dress at the Fake Target Salvation Army in downtown MPLS. This place is AWESOME. They get all these donations from Target headquarters and price 'em at thrift store prices! I got this dress purely because it kinda looks like the De La Renta that The Russian gives Carrie in Sex and the City. OH MAN.

sequin dress!sequin dress!

This garage sale dress is a leetle big, but was SO worth it - and I think it looks okay with a belt? Anywho, it has tons of sequins which I think is worth it. WHERE IS A FANCY DINNER PARTY WHEN I NEED ONE?!

cornflower dress!cornflower dress!

My most recent acquisition, from the Mall of St. Paul - I actually bought it today during their 15% off sale (Twin Cities residents: It's going on all weekend! GOGOGOGO!!) Where was this dress all summer? It is perfect. I'm imagining I'll be wearing it a tonnnn.

What can I do to break the cycle? HELP!!

I know this is many-an illustrator's lament, but why don't children's books look like this anymore?

before & after

before

after

it's almost embarrassing to see how bad I get when I don't like a piece of furniture. that old desk was just ugg-o. Hopefully my new, pretty ($15!) desk will inspire me to stay clean. i'd like a new desk lamp, though... please.

THE RING

things have been pretty good on emma's side of the world. work is work and i am trying everso desperately to make art (which is slowly seeing the light of day) and SES is starting, so that's good!

but nothing to blog, really - except for this ring spotted at a fourth of july flea market that has MOTHERFRICKIN GOOGLY EYES ON IT. Why aren't there googly eyes on everything?
